In the heart of Rotterdam lies the largest academic medical center of the Netherlands, the Erasmus MC. Over 13.000 people work at this Rotterdam cluster of hospitals. The Erasmus MC represents a healthy population and excellent care through research and education. There is a strong focus on groundbreaking work, shifting boundaries, and being ahead in research, education and care.
After 50 years, the main building of the Erasmus MC was quite outdated. An academic hospital is a facility in which technological advancements plays an important part. In addition, current rules and regulations make steep demands. This is why the Erasmus MC underwent a large-scale renovation and expansion. Originally this expansion included a new, privately owned datacenter. These plans were cancelled in 2016, however, because the hospital reached the conclusion that it would not be able to sustain a datacenter adhering to the required quality and security standards. This resulted in having to find a datacenter elsewhere.
This assignment was paired with an almost impossible deadline. The terms were that the date of completion was to be May 1st 2017. This date was paired with the introduction of HiX, Erasmus MC’s new Electronic Patient Record (EPD), the planned demolition of the last own datacenter and an internal move at the beginning of 2018. The assignment had to be completed within 14 weeks. To put this into perspective, for a similar assignment the duration is usually 14 months.
The Erasmus MC has decided to house all data and software systems with The Datacenter Group in Delft and Bytesnet in Rotterdam. By using a Twin Datacenter solution the Rotterdam hospital is choosing guaranteed higher availability and better security.
Despite the fact that The Datacenter Group and Bytesnet are competitors, they also prove adapt at collaboration. “Although we are competitors, we are more than willing to work together if it ensures a better solution for our client,” says CEO Siemon van den Berg about the involvement of The Datacenter Group. They have been offering a Twin Datacenter concept in collaboration with Bytesnet since 2014. This concept offers many advantages and also in this case the collaboration
proved the best solution for the client.
TWIN DATACENTER CONCEPT
Although we are competitors, we are more than willing to work together if this means a better
solution for our client. We’ve been offering a Twin Datacenter concept together since 2014, with
storage at two geographically separate locations. Should one datacenter experience a disruption,
everything can continue to run normally.”
Despite the complexity, amount of work and the short delivery timeframe, the planned date of May 1st 2017 was reached. “Normally a project of this size requires fourteen months; we managed to do it in fourteen weeks”, says Michael Arbman, Business Development Manager at Bytesnet. Due to a mutual feeling of trust, The Datacenter Group started early with making arrangements in the areas of power, cooling, and security. This, paired with a strict agenda in combination with clear communication made the reaching of this deadline possible.
14 WEKEN IN PLAATS VAN 14 MAANDEN
Normally a project of this size requires fourteen months; we managed to do it in fourteen weeks. It took strict planning, trust, clear agreements and good communication. The Datacenter Group and Bytesnet teams
collaborated extremely well.
In addition to acquiring the desired quality and security standards, Erasmus MC is now saving 20% on a yearly basis. The required quality and security standards are guaranteed through the extensive certifications maintained by The Datacenter Group, namely: ISO 9001, ISO 14000, ISO 27001, and NEN 7510. This last one
focuses specifically on data security within the healthcare sector, amongst other reasons due to the usage of electronic patient files.
Should one datacenter experience a disruption, everything can keep on running as per usual. All connections are also redundant: together with the Erasmus MC campus the datacenters form a ring. In addition, a dedicated fiber optic connection was constructed between The Datacenter Group in Delft and Bytesnet in Rotterdam.
