GVB

It is impossible to imagine the Amsterdam city streets without the familiar subways, busses, and trams from the GVB. Thousands of tourists, day trippers, and Amsterdam citizens make daily use of the GVB’s transport to reach their final destination. The use of the OV-chipcard (the dutch version of the Oyster Card) in our capital city is more of a rule than an exception. In many cases the busy and impatient city traffic makes it essential to use the safe and fast travel methods of the GVB to reach your destination.

Challenge
Moving is refreshing

A renovation and their internal migration led the GVB to take a closer look at her datacenter environment. Do we centralize all internal datacenters? Or will outsourcing offer a better solution? These are just some of the questions raised by the management of the GVB. “It’s taken us more than a year to work through all possible scenarios. Outsourcing was the recurring theme”, says Bas van Kan of TiM-project managers, who, as external project manager, has been hired to streamline the migration process.

Everything is scalable: the number of servers, the power supply, the rack space. With this transition GVB is better able to focus on her core task: transporting ten thousands of people in and around Amsterdam on a daily basis. TDCG can guarantee the quality of the hosting of ICT services.

Solution
Oursourcing as a solution

During the migration year the GVB discovered that datacenter housing could be done much simpler and more reliable, and thus decided on full outsourcing. For the GVB the datacenter housing is not a core task, but a side job. Due to the large budget that was set to cover outsourcing costs, the task had to be tendered within Europe. A package of demands was written to which responding datacenters had to comply. Some of these demands included that the datacenter be staffed, secured, and capable of providing support 24/7/365. The datacenter should also be in possession of the required ISO-certificates, and needed to be classified as at least a TIER 3 datacenter. Being a carrier-neutral datacenter was also one of the requirements. The latter meaning the customer retains freedom of choice in selecting a telecom provider. The Datacenter Group was one of the tenderers that complied with all demands and successfully won the tender.

Green datacenter

The GVB is pleased with the partnership they have entered with The Datacenter Group. Van Kan: “During the migration process The Datacenter Group took a proactive and professional stance. They thought along on issues like the arrangement of the servers, cabling, and the possibilities to add additional security measures to our servers.” Interesting to note is that during the tender process The Datacenter Group was way ahead of the rest in terms of sustainability. “This is high on the GVB’s priority list, so with the datacenter’s green character we have found a good partner in this field”, says Van Kan.

They thought along on issues like the arrangement of the servers, cabling, and the possibilities to add additional security measures to our serves. In addition, The Datacenter Group acts as a sounding board for the GVB with regards to ideas for the future.

Result
Flexibility and Scalability

By outsourcing to The Datacenter Group, the GBV has increased its flexibility and scalability. Van Kan: “Everything is scalable: the number of servers, the power supply, the rack space. TDCG can guarantee the quality of the hosting of ICT services.”

Good service and availability

The short communication lines, the flexible attitude, and the strict ISO-norms set by The Datacenter Group are all viewed in a positive light by Van Kan. The remote management did take some getting used to. “In reality it’s no different from the old location. We only need to visit the datacenter for adding servers or installing updates, and the datacenter is conveniently located for us. In addition, The Datacenter Group acts as a sounding board for the GVB with regards to ideas for the future,” concludes the project manager.
