About 1,2 million people live in the area managed by Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland, and roughly 40.000 businesses are situated there, among them the largest greenhouse area of our country. It’s a complex area in which Delfland ensures safety through sturdy dams and dikes, and dry feet thanks to pumping stations and a well-functioning water system. This system ensures a good water quality in trenches and channels, and cleans wastewater originating from homes and businesses.
The operational processes that make sure the Water Board can successfully practice its tasks are highly IT dependent. About 200 pumping stations need to be responsive to remote control 24/7. Delfland’s dike inspectors are out in the field when they use their iPads to report on the condition of over 700 km of dike. At the wastewater treatment plant the purification process is monitored via smart process automation systems.
“Delfland has been around for 725 years. That’s a respectable age, but thankfully this has never stopped us from moving with the times. Also in the area of automation and digitalization”, says Marc van Uunen, ICT coordinator with the Hoogheemraadschap. “My team regularly reviews the IT needs of our organization. In 2012 we came to the conclusion that based on our company’s ambitions we were going to need a brand new ICT environment.”
In an external datacenter, cooling, floor load, power supply, emergency power, and UPS systems are all fully synchronized to support the core task of the datacenter: harboring clients’ IT environments.
An important consideration for the Water Board was that their datacenter was located in the historical main office on the Oude Delft. According to Van Uunen, office buildings are rarely equipped to host a full-fledged, highly available datacenter. “Often there are just too many risks. In an external datacenter, cooling, floor load, power supply, emergency power, and UPS systems are all fully synchronized to support the core task of the datacenter: harboring clients’ IT environments. This is why we decided to outsource our ICT environment to a professional datacenter.”
Van Uunen: “Water management is a task you can never do alone. As Water Board you always work closely with partners in the area. This is why we put great stock in a good collaboration and the reliability of our partners. Naturally this also applies when considering something as essential as the outsourcing of your IT environment. We chose The Datacenter Group not just because of its location but also because of the security and availability of the datacenter. The operational reliability of Delfland matters greatly to the 1,2 million inhabitants of the area. Van Uunen continues: “It is terrifying to think of our pumping systems being unavailable, or the wastewater treatment plant being out of commission. The services provided by The Datacenter Group match our expectations and needs. This company suits us.”
