Pieter van Foreest

With over 25 locations, elderly care institution Pieter van Foreest (PvF) is one of the largest care providers in the province of Zuid Holland On a daily basis staff and volunteers offer a wide variety of services to the elderly in the fields of living, care, and well-being, in the regions of Delft, Midden-Delfland, Pijnacker-Nootdorp and Westland. In addition, the institution has an active and innovative ICT-team that looks at ICT as an important part of business operations.

Challenge

Patient as main focus

This ICT-team has made sure that a critical eye was cast on their former ICT environment. Sander Rimmelzwaan, Project Manager Communications and Infrastructure explains: “Developments in the healthcare sector have undergone great changes. Clients are gaining more control over their proceedings and care plans. There is much more collaboration. In this case the exchange of information is crucial.” Processes are conducted with the patient, and no longer solely with practitioners or caregivers.

From decentralized to centralized

PvF not only wants to provide the best care, but is also progressive when it comes to ICT developments. All of Pieter van Foreests locations used to have their own ICT-infrastructure. This caused a lot of work and maintenance. Additionally, their ICT-infrastructure was not prepared for the future. This is the reason it was decided to realize one central datacenter with a uniform basic-infrastructure. “One of our principal demands was to centralize management even further”, says Rimmelzwaan. “Increasing continuity, flexibility, and availability of the ICT environment means that the care institution can work even faster and more efficient.”

Our data communication is now located within a Tier 3 certified Dutch datacenter. This built-in security is our top priority. After all, we work with patient records and human lives.

Solution

Safe and reliable

In this context, the migration project group created a draft of requirements an external datacenter needed to meet. Rimmelzwaan, who was a part of this group, explains these demands: “In case of emergency we need to be at the datacenter in as little time as possible, since it concerns human lives. On the other hand, healthcare is always facing budget cuts. The datacenter costs need to reflect that.”

Another important requirement, if not the most important, is that the communication data needs to be located in a Tier 3 certified Dutch datacenter. Rimmelzwaan: “This built-in security is our top priority. After all, we work with patient records and human lives. Simultaneously, our collaboration with a datacenter makes our organization more flexible and manageable. We are less focused on implementation, and more on direction and control, without having to make large investments.”

The Datacenter Group the right partner

The Datacenter Group quickly caught PvF’s eye. The datacenter meets all the requirements and has been taking care of other care institutions’ communication data for years. For Pieter van Foreest this created the trust and confidence that their healthcare communication infrastructure would rest in good hands. Healthcare communication includes telephony, nurse call systems, and home automation systems (cameras and sensors).

We trust the datacenter with our business-critical equipment, and through this indirectly with the lives of our patients. Our healthcare communications have been accommodated in a safe environment. Thanks to a good collaboration between Pieter van Foreest and The Datacenter Group, the care institution can focus on her core task: the care of patients

Result

Effective and cost-efficient

A complete renovation as well as a complete move of ICT-environments took place. Additionally a disaster recovery environment was created in one of PvF’s own office buildings. Two different locations are now running an identical production environment each with their own data lines. This guarantees availability in times of emergency. Due to all adjustments to their ICT infrastructure Pieter van Foreest now operates a better manageable ICT environment. They are also saving energy costs. “The datacenter offers high quality at an acceptable rate. “We trust the datacenter with our business-critical equipment, and through this indirectly with the lives of our patients. Our healthcare communications have been accommodated in a safe environment.” Thanks to a good collaboration between Pieter van Foreest and The Datacenter Group, the care institution can focus on her core task: caring for patients.
